Overview
Nasal polyps are linked to long-term inflammation of the nose and sinuses. Small polyps may not cause symptoms, while larger ones block the nose.
Symptoms
- A blocked nose
- Runny nose and post-nasal drip
- Loss of smell and taste
- Facial pressure
- Snoring
Causes and risk factors
They are linked to chronic sinusitis, asthma, allergies, aspirin sensitivity and cystic fibrosis.
Diagnosis
An ENT specialist examines the nose with an endoscope. A CT scan shows the extent.
Treatment
Treatment includes steroid nasal sprays or drops, short courses of steroid tablets and endoscopic sinus surgery if medicines do not help.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for a long-lasting blocked nose or loss of smell. Polyps on one side only should be checked by a specialist.
