Overview
Necrotising fasciitis is a surgical emergency. Fast treatment with surgery and antibiotics saves lives and limbs.
Symptoms
- Severe pain out of proportion to the appearance of the skin
- Swelling, redness and warm skin that spreads quickly
- Dark or purple skin, blisters
- Fever, fast heartbeat and feeling very unwell
Causes and risk factors
It can follow cuts, surgery or injections. Risk factors include diabetes, a weak immune system, kidney disease, alcohol misuse and obesity.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on examination and blood tests, sometimes with a scan. Surgery confirms the diagnosis.
Treatment
Treatment is urgent surgery to remove infected tissue, intravenous antibiotics and intensive care. Reconstructive surgery may be needed later.
When to see a doctor
Seek emergency care for severe pain and rapidly spreading redness, especially with fever, after an injury or surgery.
