Overview
Nephrocalcinosis is often found on a scan and may cause no symptoms. It can lead to kidney stones and reduced kidney function over time.
Symptoms
- Usually no symptoms
- Kidney stones causing pain
- Blood in the urine
- Symptoms of the underlying condition
Causes and risk factors
Causes include high blood calcium, overactive parathyroid glands, renal tubular acidosis, medullary sponge kidney, some medicines and premature birth.
Diagnosis
It is diagnosed with ultrasound or CT. Blood and urine tests look for the cause.
Treatment
Treatment focuses on the cause, plus drinking plenty of fluids and medicines to reduce calcium in the urine.

See a doctor if nephrocalcinosis has been found on a scan or you have recurrent kidney stones.
