Overview
Noise-induced hearing loss can result from a single very loud sound or long-term exposure to loud noise. It is permanent but preventable.
Symptoms
- Muffled hearing
- Difficulty hearing in noisy places
- Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
- Difficulty hearing high-pitched sounds
Causes and risk factors
Risk factors include working in loud environments, loud music through headphones, concerts, firearms and fireworks.
Diagnosis
Hearing tests (audiometry) show the typical pattern of noise damage.
Treatment
The damage cannot be reversed. Hearing aids help, and further damage can be prevented with ear protection and lower volumes.
When to see a doctor
See an ENT specialist if you notice hearing loss or ringing in the ears. Seek urgent care for sudden hearing loss.
