Overview
Non-small cell lung cancer usually grows more slowly than small cell lung cancer. Testing the tumour for gene changes helps guide modern targeted treatments.
Symptoms
- A persistent cough
- Coughing up blood
- Breathlessness
- Chest pain
- Weight loss and tiredness
- Hoarseness
Causes and risk factors
Smoking is the main cause. Others include second-hand smoke, air pollution, asbestos, radon and family history. Adenocarcinoma also occurs in non-smokers.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis uses CT scans, biopsy by bronchoscopy or needle, PET scans and testing of the tumour for markers such as EGFR and ALK.
Treatment
Treatment includes surgery for early stages, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for a cough lasting more than three weeks, coughing up blood or unexplained weight loss.
