Overview

OCPD is different from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). People with OCPD often see their behaviour as correct rather than distressing. Therapy can help improve flexibility and relationships.

Symptoms

  • Preoccupation with rules, lists, details and schedules
  • Perfectionism that gets in the way of finishing tasks
  • Excessive devotion to work at the expense of leisure and friendships
  • Rigid, stubborn attitudes about morals and values
  • Reluctance to delegate tasks
  • Difficulty discarding old objects or spending money

Causes and risk factors

The cause is not fully understood. Genetics, strict upbringing and early life experiences may play a role.

Diagnosis

A psychiatrist or psychologist makes the diagnosis through detailed interviews.

Treatment

Treatment includes talking therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy. Medicines may help with related anxiety or depression.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if rigid habits or perfectionism are harming your work, relationships or wellbeing.
