Overview
Oesophagitis is most often caused by acid reflux. If not treated, it can cause narrowing or ulcers of the oesophagus.
Symptoms
- Heartburn
- Pain or difficulty when swallowing
- Food getting stuck
- Chest pain
- Acid or food coming back up
Causes and risk factors
Causes include acid reflux (GERD), allergies (eosinophilic oesophagitis), infections, some tablets such as painkillers and antibiotics if not swallowed with enough water, and radiotherapy.
Diagnosis
An endoscopy with biopsies confirms the diagnosis and its cause.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause and may include acid-reducing medicines, diet changes, steroids for eosinophilic oesophagitis and antifungal or antiviral medicines.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for persistent heartburn or difficulty swallowing. Seek urgent care if food is stuck or you vomit blood.
