Overview
Orthodontic treatment straightens teeth and corrects bite problems. It is often done in childhood or adolescence but can also be done in adults.
Signs
- Crowded or crooked teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Protruding upper front teeth
- An overbite, underbite or crossbite
- Difficulty chewing or biting
Causes and risk factors
Causes include inherited jaw and tooth size, early loss of baby teeth, thumb sucking and mouth breathing.
Diagnosis
A dentist or orthodontist examines the teeth and bite, and takes X-rays, photos and impressions.
Treatment
Treatment may include fixed braces, clear aligners, removable appliances and, for severe jaw problems, surgery combined with orthodontics. Retainers help keep results.
When to see a doctor
Children should have an orthodontic check around age 7 to 9. See a dentist if you have bite problems or concerns about your teeth.
