Overview
Osteoarthritis can affect any joint, but most often the knees, hips, hands and spine. It cannot be reversed, but treatment can reduce pain and improve movement.
Symptoms
- Joint pain that is worse with activity
- Stiffness, especially after rest
- Swelling
- Reduced range of movement
- Grating or cracking in the joint
- Bony lumps on the finger joints
Causes and risk factors
Risk factors include age, obesity, previous joint injury, joint overuse, family history and being female.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on symptoms and examination. X-rays show joint narrowing.
Treatment
Treatment includes exercise, weight loss, physiotherapy, painkillers, injections and, for severe cases, joint replacement surgery.
