Overview
Osteoid osteomas are not dangerous but can cause significant pain. They respond well to treatment.
Symptoms
- Dull, aching bone pain that is worse at night
- Pain that is relieved by anti-inflammatory painkillers
- Limping or stiffness
- Swelling
Causes and risk factors
The cause is unknown. They are most common in the legs and spine of young people.
Diagnosis
X-rays and CT scans show the tumour.
Treatment
Treatment may include painkillers or a minimally invasive procedure (radiofrequency ablation). Surgery is sometimes needed.
