Overview
Osteoporosis often causes no symptoms until a fracture happens, often in the hip, spine or wrist. Treatment can strengthen bones and lower the risk of fractures.
Symptoms
- No symptoms until a fracture
- Fractures after minor falls
- Loss of height
- A stooped posture
- Back pain from spinal fractures
Causes and risk factors
Risk factors include older age, menopause, family history, low body weight, smoking, alcohol, low calcium and vitamin D, inactivity and long-term steroids.
Diagnosis
A bone density (DEXA) scan measures bone strength.
Treatment
Treatment includes calcium and vitamin D, exercise, fall prevention and medicines such as bisphosphonates.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if you have broken a bone after a minor fall or have risk factors for osteoporosis.
