Overview

Osteosarcoma often develops around the knee or in the upper arm. Treatment combines chemotherapy and surgery, and many people are cured.

Symptoms

  • Bone pain that gets worse over time and at night
  • Swelling or a lump
  • Limping
  • A fracture after minor injury

Causes and risk factors

It is most common during growth spurts. Previous radiotherapy and some inherited conditions increase the risk.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis uses X-rays, MRI, CT and bone scans, and a biopsy.

Treatment

Treatment includes chemotherapy before and after surgery. Limb-sparing surgery is usually possible.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor for bone pain or swelling that lasts more than a few weeks, especially pain at night.
