Overview

Otitis externa is common in hot, humid weather and after swimming. It usually improves quickly with ear drops.

Symptoms

  • Ear pain, worse when the ear is touched or pulled
  • Itching in the ear canal
  • Discharge from the ear
  • A blocked feeling and reduced hearing
  • Swelling of the ear canal

Causes and risk factors

Risk factors include swimming, humidity, cotton buds or objects in the ear, hearing aids, eczema and diabetes.

Diagnosis

A doctor examines the ear canal with an otoscope.

Treatment

Treatment includes antibiotic or antifungal ear drops, pain relief, keeping the ear dry and cleaning of the ear canal by a doctor.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor for ear pain or discharge. People with diabetes should seek prompt care, as infections can be more serious.
