Overview
Otosclerosis usually starts in young adults and is more common in women. Hearing can be improved with hearing aids or surgery.
Symptoms
- Gradual hearing loss, often in both ears
- Hearing better in noisy places
- Ringing in the ears
- Dizziness in some cases
Causes and risk factors
It often runs in families. Pregnancy can make it worse.
Diagnosis
Hearing tests show a typical pattern. A CT scan may be done.
Treatment
Treatment includes hearing aids or surgery (stapedotomy) to replace the fixed bone with a small implant.
