Overview
Paget's disease usually affects older adults and may involve the pelvis, spine, skull or legs. Many people have no symptoms.
Symptoms
- Bone pain
- Bone deformities such as bowed legs
- Fractures
- Headaches and hearing loss when the skull is affected
- Warm skin over the affected bone
Causes and risk factors
The cause is not fully understood. Genetics plays a role, and it is more common after age 50.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis uses blood tests for alkaline phosphatase, X-rays and bone scans.
Treatment
Treatment includes bisphosphonate medicines to control bone turnover, painkillers and, if needed, surgery for fractures or deformities.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for ongoing bone pain, a bone that changes shape or hearing loss with headaches.
