Overview
Pancreatic cancer can be difficult to detect early. Prompt investigation of warning signs improves the chance of treatment.
Symptoms
- Painless jaundice
- Upper abdominal pain spreading to the back
- Loss of appetite and weight loss
- Pale, oily stools and dark urine
- New diabetes, especially with weight loss
Causes and risk factors
Risk factors include smoking, obesity, diabetes, chronic pancreatitis, family history and older age.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis uses CT or MRI scans, endoscopic ultrasound, blood tests and biopsy.
Treatment
Treatment may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and procedures to relieve blockages and symptoms.
