Overview
Panic attacks are frightening but not dangerous. Panic disorder is very treatable with therapy and medicines.
Symptoms
- Sudden intense fear
- Racing or pounding heart
- Chest pain or tightness
- Shortness of breath or choking
- Dizziness, sweating and trembling
- Fear of losing control or dying
- Avoiding places for fear of attacks
Causes and risk factors
Risk factors include family history, stressful life events, other anxiety disorders and caffeine or substance use.
Diagnosis
A doctor rules out heart and other physical causes and makes the diagnosis after discussing symptoms.
Treatment
Treatment includes cognitive behavioural therapy, breathing techniques and medicines such as SSRIs.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if you have repeated panic attacks. Seek emergency care for chest pain if you are not sure it is a panic attack.
