Overview
PDA is common in premature babies. Small PDAs may close on their own, while larger ones can strain the heart and lungs.
Signs
- Fast breathing
- Poor feeding and weight gain
- Sweating with feeds
- A heart murmur
- Tiredness
Causes and risk factors
Risk factors include premature birth, rubella in pregnancy and some genetic conditions.
Diagnosis
An echocardiogram confirms the diagnosis.
Treatment
Treatment may include monitoring, medicines to close the duct in premature babies, catheter closure or surgery.

See a doctor if your baby breathes fast, feeds poorly or does not gain weight.
