Overview
Early treatment of PID reduces the risk of long-term problems such as chronic pelvic pain, ectopic pregnancy and infertility.
Symptoms
- Pain in the lower abdomen
- Abnormal vaginal discharge
- Pain during sex
- Bleeding between periods or after sex
- Fever
- Pain when passing urine
Causes and risk factors
It is often caused by chlamydia or gonorrhoea. Risk factors include multiple sexual partners, previous PID and recent procedures such as coil insertion.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on symptoms, pelvic examination, swabs and sometimes ultrasound.
Treatment
Treatment is a course of antibiotics. Partners should also be treated. Severe cases may need hospital care.
