Overview
Pelvic organ prolapse is common after childbirth and menopause. It is not life-threatening, and there are effective treatments.
Symptoms
- A feeling of heaviness or dragging in the vagina
- A bulge or something coming down
- Difficulty passing urine or stool
- Urine leakage
- Discomfort during sex
Causes and risk factors
Risk factors include vaginal childbirth, ageing, menopause, obesity, chronic cough, constipation and heavy lifting.
Diagnosis
A doctor diagnoses it with a pelvic examination.
Treatment
Treatment includes pelvic floor exercises, weight loss, vaginal pessaries and surgery.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if you notice a bulge or dragging sensation, or have bladder or bowel problems.
