Overview
Peripheral artery disease is a sign of widespread artery disease and increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. Treatment improves symptoms and protects the heart.
Symptoms
- Cramping leg pain when walking that eases with rest
- Cold or numb feet
- Weak or absent foot pulses
- Slow-healing sores on the feet or toes
- Shiny skin and hair loss on the legs
Causes and risk factors
It is caused by atherosclerosis. Risk factors include smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and older age.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis uses an ankle-brachial index test, Doppler ultrasound and CT or angiography.
Treatment
Treatment includes stopping smoking, walking exercise, medicines to prevent clots and lower cholesterol, angioplasty, stents and bypass surgery.
