Overview
Pheochromocytomas can cause episodes of very high blood pressure. Surgery usually cures them.
Symptoms
- Episodes of severe headache, sweating and palpitations
- High blood pressure that may come and go
- Anxiety or panic
- Tremor
- Pale skin
Causes and risk factors
Some are inherited as part of genetic conditions. Most occur without a known cause.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis uses blood or urine tests for metanephrines and CT or MRI scans.
Treatment
Treatment involves medicines to control blood pressure followed by surgery to remove the tumour.
