Overview
Phobias are common anxiety disorders. They can limit daily life but respond very well to treatment.
Symptoms
- Intense fear or anxiety when facing the trigger
- Avoiding the trigger
- Panic, sweating, trembling or racing heart
- Knowing the fear is excessive but being unable to control it
Causes and risk factors
Phobias may develop after a frightening experience or by learning from others. Genetics and temperament play a role.
Diagnosis
A doctor or psychologist makes the diagnosis by discussing symptoms.
Treatment
Treatment includes exposure therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy. Medicines may help in some cases.
