Overview
Pinworms are tiny white worms that live in the bowel. The infection is harmless but itchy and spreads easily among family members.
Symptoms
- Itching around the anus, worse at night
- Disturbed sleep and irritability
- Visible tiny white worms around the anus or in stool
- Itching around the vagina in girls
Causes and risk factors
Eggs spread from the anus to fingers and then to the mouth, bedding, clothes and surfaces. They are common in school-age children.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is made by seeing the worms or using a tape test in the morning to collect eggs.
Treatment
Treatment is a single dose of an anti-worm medicine, repeated after two weeks. The whole household is usually treated. Hand washing, short nails and washing bedding help prevent reinfection.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if itching continues after treatment or if a young child or pregnant woman is affected.
