Overview
Pituitary gigantism happens when excess growth hormone is produced before the growth plates close, usually because of a pituitary tumour. Early treatment helps prevent complications.

- Very fast growth and tall height for age
- Large hands and feet
- Thickening of facial features
- Headaches and vision problems
- Delayed puberty
- Excess sweating
Causes and risk factors
It is usually caused by a non-cancerous pituitary tumour. Some genetic conditions increase the risk.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis uses growth hormone and IGF-1 blood tests, a glucose suppression test and MRI of the pituitary.
Treatment
Treatment includes surgery to remove the tumour, medicines to lower growth hormone and radiotherapy.
When to see a doctor
