Overview
Pneumonia can be caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi. It can range from mild to life-threatening and is most serious in young children, older adults and people with other health problems.
Symptoms
- Cough, which may bring up phlegm
- Fever, sweating and chills
- Shortness of breath or rapid breathing
- Chest pain when breathing or coughing
- Tiredness and loss of appetite
- Confusion, especially in older adults
Causes and risk factors
- Age under 2 or over 65
- Smoking
- Long-term conditions such as COPD, asthma, diabetes or heart disease
- A weakened immune system
- Recent viral infections such as flu
Diagnosis
A doctor listens to your chest and may order a chest X-ray, blood tests and a measurement of your oxygen level.
Treatment
Bacterial pneumonia is treated with antibiotics. Rest, fluids and fever control help recovery. Severe pneumonia may need hospital care with oxygen. Vaccines can prevent some types of pneumonia.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if you have a cough with fever or breathlessness. Seek emergency care for severe difficulty breathing, bluish lips, confusion or chest pain.
