Overview
A pneumothorax can happen without warning in tall, thin young people, or as a result of lung disease or injury. Small ones may heal on their own, while larger ones need treatment.
Symptoms
- Sudden sharp chest pain on one side
- Shortness of breath
- Fast heartbeat
- Bluish skin in severe cases
Causes and risk factors
Risk factors include smoking, being tall and thin, lung conditions such as COPD and asthma, chest injury and some medical procedures.
Diagnosis
A chest X-ray or CT scan confirms the diagnosis.
Treatment
Treatment may be observation, oxygen, needle drainage or a chest drain. Surgery may be needed for repeated episodes.
