Overview
Polycystic kidney disease is one of the most common inherited kidney conditions. It progresses slowly, and treatment can help protect kidney function.
Symptoms
- High blood pressure
- Pain in the back or side
- Blood in the urine
- Kidney stones and urinary infections
- An enlarged abdomen
- Kidney failure later in life
Causes and risk factors
It is caused by gene changes, usually inherited from one parent.
Diagnosis
Ultrasound, CT or MRI shows the cysts. Genetic testing may be used.
Treatment
Treatment includes controlling blood pressure, drinking plenty of water, managing pain and infections, specific medicines in some cases and dialysis or transplant if the kidneys fail.
