Overview

Post nasal drip is common and usually linked to allergies, colds or sinus problems. It can cause a persistent cough and throat clearing.

Symptoms

  • Constant need to clear the throat
  • Cough, often worse at night
  • Sore or scratchy throat
  • A feeling of a lump in the throat
  • Bad breath

Causes and risk factors

Causes include allergies, colds, sinusitis, cold air, spicy foods, acid reflux and some medicines.

Diagnosis

A doctor examines the nose and throat. An ENT specialist may use a small camera.

Treatment

Treatment includes saline rinses, steroid nasal sprays, antihistamines, treating sinusitis or reflux and drinking plenty of fluids.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if symptoms last more than 10 days or come with fever, blood or discoloured mucus on one side.
