Overview

Post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis usually appears one to three weeks after a throat infection, or a few weeks after a skin infection. Most children recover completely.

Symptoms

  • Cola-coloured or dark urine
  • Swelling of the face and eyes
  • Reduced urine
  • High blood pressure
  • Headache

Causes and risk factors

It is caused by the immune response to group A streptococcus bacteria. Crowded living conditions and untreated skin infections increase the risk.

Diagnosis

Tests include urine tests, blood tests of kidney function and complement levels, and tests for recent strep infection.

Treatment

Treatment includes controlling blood pressure and fluid, reducing salt and antibiotics if infection is still present.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor for dark urine or puffy eyes after a sore throat or skin infection. Seek urgent care for headache, reduced urine or difficulty breathing.
