Overview
PTSD can start soon after a traumatic event or months later. It is treatable, and many people recover with the right support.
Symptoms
- Flashbacks and nightmares
- Avoiding reminders of the event
- Feeling on edge, irritable or easily startled
- Difficulty sleeping and concentrating
- Negative thoughts, guilt or feeling numb
Causes and risk factors
It can follow events such as violence, accidents, disasters, abuse or the sudden loss of a loved one. Previous trauma, lack of support and other mental health conditions increase the risk.
Diagnosis
A psychiatrist or psychologist makes the diagnosis after discussing symptoms.
Treatment
Treatment includes trauma-focused talking therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy and EMDR, and medicines such as SSRIs.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if distressing symptoms last more than a month. Seek urgent help if you have thoughts of harming yourself.
