Overview
Postpartum psychosis usually starts in the first few weeks after birth. With urgent treatment, most women recover fully.
Symptoms
- Confusion
- Hallucinations or delusions
- Rapid mood swings, mania or severe depression
- Restlessness and difficulty sleeping
- Behaving out of character
Causes and risk factors
Risk factors include bipolar disorder, previous postpartum psychosis and family history.
Diagnosis
A psychiatrist makes the diagnosis after urgent assessment.
Treatment
Treatment is usually in hospital with medicines and close support. Women with known risk should plan their care before birth.
When to see a doctor
Seek emergency care immediately if a new mother shows confusion, hallucinations or very unusual behaviour.
