Overview
Regular antenatal care helps keep mother and baby healthy and allows problems to be found early. Pregnancy is divided into three trimesters.
Early signs of pregnancy
- A missed period
- Nausea or vomiting
- Breast tenderness
- Tiredness
- Needing to pass urine more often
Antenatal care
Antenatal visits include checking blood pressure, weight, urine, blood tests, ultrasound scans and the baby's growth and heartbeat. Folic acid, iron and calcium supplements are often recommended.
Healthy pregnancy
Eat a balanced diet, stay active, avoid smoking and alcohol, check medicines with your doctor and attend all appointments.
Warning signs
- Vaginal bleeding
- Severe abdominal pain
- Severe headache, vision changes or swelling of the face
- Reduced baby movements
- Leaking fluid from the vagina
- Fever
When to see a doctor
Book antenatal care as soon as you know you are pregnant. Seek urgent care if you have any of the warning signs.
