Overview

Premature ejaculation is one of the most common sexual problems in men. It is treatable with behavioural techniques, counselling and medicines.

Symptoms

  • Ejaculation within about a minute of penetration
  • Being unable to delay ejaculation
  • Frustration, anxiety or avoidance of sex

Causes and risk factors

Causes include anxiety, stress, relationship problems, erectile dysfunction, prostate inflammation and thyroid problems.

Diagnosis

A doctor takes a history and may check for underlying problems.

Treatment

Treatment includes behavioural techniques, counselling, numbing creams and medicines.
