Overview

Prolactinomas are the most common type of hormone-producing pituitary tumour. They usually respond very well to medicine.

Symptoms

  • Irregular or absent periods
  • Breast milk discharge when not breastfeeding
  • Low sex drive and erectile dysfunction
  • Infertility
  • Headaches and vision problems with large tumours

Causes and risk factors

The cause is usually unknown.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis uses blood tests for prolactin and MRI of the pituitary.

Treatment

Treatment is usually medicine (dopamine agonists) to shrink the tumour. Surgery is rarely needed.

See a doctor for irregular periods, breast milk discharge, low sex drive or difficulty conceiving.
