Prostate cancer often grows slowly. Many men live with it for years without symptoms, while others need treatment. Early detection helps choose the right approach.
Symptoms
- Often no symptoms early on
- Needing to pass urine more often, especially at night
- A weak urine stream
- Blood in the urine or semen
- Bone pain in advanced cases
Causes and risk factors
Risk factors include older age, family history and certain inherited gene changes.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis uses a PSA blood test, rectal examination, MRI and a biopsy.
Treatment
Treatment may include active surveillance, surgery, radiotherapy, hormone therapy and chemotherapy.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for urinary symptoms or to discuss PSA testing, especially if you are over 50 or have a family history.
