Overview
Prostatitis can affect men of any age. Acute prostatitis is a bacterial infection needing prompt treatment, while chronic prostatitis can cause long-term pelvic pain.
Symptoms
- Pain in the pelvis, genitals, lower back or between the scrotum and anus
- Pain when passing urine or ejaculating
- Needing to pass urine often
- Fever and chills in acute prostatitis
Causes and risk factors
Acute prostatitis is caused by bacteria. The cause of chronic prostatitis is often unclear.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis uses urine tests, a rectal examination and blood tests.
Treatment
Treatment includes antibiotics, painkillers, alpha-blockers and pelvic floor physiotherapy.
