Overview

Proteinuria is often found on a routine urine test. It may be temporary, but persistent proteinuria needs assessment.

Symptoms

  • Usually no symptoms
  • Foamy urine
  • Swelling of the face, ankles or abdomen

Causes and risk factors

Causes include diabetes, high blood pressure, glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome, infection, fever and heavy exercise.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis uses urine tests such as albumin-to-creatinine ratio and blood tests of kidney function.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the cause and may include blood pressure and diabetes control and medicines that reduce protein loss.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if protein has been found in your urine. People with diabetes or high blood pressure should have yearly urine checks.
