Overview
Renal papillary necrosis happens when part of the kidney tissue loses its blood supply. Pieces of dead tissue can block urine flow.
Symptoms
- Blood in the urine
- Side or back pain
- Passing tissue in the urine
- Fever and chills
- Urinary tract infections
Causes and risk factors
Causes include diabetes, long-term use of painkillers, sickle cell disease, urinary obstruction, kidney infections and kidney transplant rejection.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis uses urine tests, blood tests and CT scans.
Treatment
Treatment includes treating the cause, stopping painkillers, treating infections and relieving blockages.
