Overview

Renal tubular acidosis can affect children and adults. It can cause poor growth, kidney stones and weak bones if not treated.

Symptoms

  • Poor growth in children
  • Tiredness and muscle weakness
  • Kidney stones
  • Bone pain or soft bones
  • Increased thirst and urination

Causes and risk factors

It can be inherited or caused by autoimmune conditions, some medicines and kidney diseases.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis uses blood and urine tests for acid, bicarbonate and potassium.

Treatment

Treatment includes alkali medicines such as sodium bicarbonate or potassium citrate and treating the underlying cause.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if a child is not growing well or you have repeated kidney stones.
