Overview

Respiratory distress syndrome is common in babies born early. Modern neonatal care has greatly improved outcomes.

Signs

  • Fast breathing soon after birth
  • Grunting
  • Drawing in of the chest
  • Flaring of the nostrils
  • Bluish colour

Causes and risk factors

The main cause is prematurity. Other risk factors include maternal diabetes, caesarean birth without labour and being a twin.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based on signs and a chest X-ray.

Treatment

Treatment includes breathing support such as CPAP or ventilation, surfactant medicine and oxygen. Steroids given to the mother before an early birth reduce the risk.

When to see a doctor

This condition is managed by the neonatal team. In pregnancy, seek care promptly for signs of early labour.
