Overview

Ringworm is not caused by a worm. It is contagious but easy to treat.

Symptoms

  • A red, scaly, ring-shaped rash
  • Itching
  • Patchy hair loss on the scalp
  • Thick, discoloured nails
  • Rash in the groin or between the toes

Causes and risk factors

It spreads through contact with infected people, animals or objects such as towels. Heat, sweating and tight clothing increase the risk.

Diagnosis

A doctor examines the skin and may take a scraping for testing.

Treatment

Treatment includes antifungal creams and, for scalp, nail or widespread infections, antifungal tablets. Avoid using steroid creams on ringworm, as they can make it worse.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if the rash spreads, does not improve with treatment or affects the scalp.
