Overview
Rotavirus can quickly cause dehydration in young children. Vaccination provides strong protection.
Symptoms
- Watery diarrhoea
- Vomiting
- Fever
- Abdominal pain
- Signs of dehydration such as fewer wet nappies, dry mouth and no tears
Causes and risk factors
It spreads through contact with stool from infected people and contaminated surfaces.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on symptoms and can be confirmed with a stool test.
Treatment
Treatment is oral rehydration solution, continued breastfeeding and zinc. Severe dehydration needs intravenous fluids.
When to see a doctor
Seek urgent care if a child shows signs of dehydration, is very sleepy or has blood in the stool.
