Overview
Most people recover within a week. Some people, such as infants, older adults and those with weak immunity, may become seriously ill.
Symptoms
- Diarrhoea, sometimes bloody
- Stomach cramps
- Fever
- Nausea and vomiting
- Headache
Causes and risk factors
It spreads through undercooked eggs and poultry, unpasteurised milk, contaminated water and poor hand hygiene.
Diagnosis
A stool test confirms the infection.
Treatment
Treatment is fluids and rest. Antibiotics are only needed for severe illness or people at high risk.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for diarrhoea lasting more than a few days, bloody stools, high fever or signs of dehydration.
