Overview

Scabies spreads easily among family members and in crowded places. It is easily treated, but everyone in the household needs treatment at the same time.

Symptoms

  • Intense itching, worse at night
  • A rash of small red bumps
  • Thin lines (burrows) between the fingers, on the wrists and around the waist
  • Sores from scratching

Causes and risk factors

It spreads through prolonged skin contact and sometimes through shared bedding and clothes.

Diagnosis

A doctor diagnoses it by examining the skin.

Treatment

Treatment includes a cream such as permethrin applied to the whole body, repeated after a week, or tablets. Wash bedding and clothes in hot water.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if you have an itchy rash that is worse at night, especially if family members also have it.
