Schizophrenia usually starts in late adolescence or early adulthood. With treatment and support, many people manage their symptoms and live meaningful lives.
Symptoms
- Hallucinations, such as hearing voices
- Delusions or unusual beliefs
- Disorganised thinking and speech
- Withdrawal from family and friends
- Lack of motivation and reduced emotions
Causes and risk factors
Risk factors include genetics, problems during pregnancy or birth, stressful life events and cannabis or drug use.
Diagnosis
A psychiatrist makes the diagnosis after a detailed assessment. Tests rule out other causes.
Treatment
Treatment includes antipsychotic medicines, talking therapies, family support and help with work and social life.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if someone has hallucinations, unusual beliefs or major changes in behaviour. Seek urgent help if they are at risk of harming themselves or others.
