Overview

Schwannomas can occur along any nerve, including the spinal nerves and the nerve to the ear (acoustic neuroma). Most grow slowly.

Symptoms

  • A painless lump along a nerve
  • Pain, numbness or tingling
  • Weakness in the area supplied by the nerve
  • Hearing loss and balance problems if near the ear

Causes and risk factors

The cause is usually unknown. Multiple schwannomas occur in neurofibromatosis type 2 and schwannomatosis.

Diagnosis

MRI shows the tumour. A biopsy is sometimes needed.

Treatment

Treatment may include monitoring, surgery to remove the tumour or radiosurgery.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor for a new lump with nerve symptoms such as tingling or weakness.
