Overview

Sciatica usually gets better on its own within six weeks. Some people need further treatment.

Symptoms

  • Pain spreading from the buttock down the leg
  • Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot
  • Weakness in the leg
  • Pain worse when sitting, coughing or sneezing

Causes and risk factors

The most common cause is a slipped (herniated) disc. Others include spinal stenosis and spondylolisthesis.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based on symptoms and examination. MRI may be done if symptoms are severe or do not improve.

Treatment

Treatment includes staying active, painkillers, physiotherapy, injections and surgery for persistent or severe cases.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if pain lasts more than a few weeks or is severe. Seek emergency care for numbness around the genitals or buttocks, loss of bladder or bowel control, or weakness in both legs.
