Overview
Scoliosis often develops during the growth spurt before puberty. Most cases are mild and need only monitoring.
Symptoms
- Uneven shoulders or hips
- One shoulder blade sticking out
- Leaning to one side
- A rib hump when bending forward
- Back pain in some adults
Causes and risk factors
Most cases have no known cause. Others are linked to conditions such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy or birth defects.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on examination and X-rays to measure the curve.
Treatment
Treatment includes monitoring, bracing in growing children and surgery for severe curves.
