Overview
Secondary hypertension is less common than primary hypertension. Treating the cause can lower or cure the high blood pressure.
Symptoms
- High blood pressure at a young age
- Blood pressure that is hard to control with medicines
- Sudden worsening of blood pressure
- Symptoms of the underlying cause
Causes and risk factors
Causes include kidney disease, narrowing of kidney arteries, hyperaldosteronism, pheochromocytoma, thyroid problems, sleep apnoea and medicines such as steroids and painkillers.
Diagnosis
Tests include blood and urine tests, kidney ultrasound and hormone tests.
Treatment
Treatment involves treating the cause, such as surgery or specific medicines, plus blood pressure medicines.
